SPTO-UIMP summer course: "Patents, Trademarks, Designs: Future challenges"

From 10 through 14 July 2017, the 12th summer course on Industrial Property (IP) was held, organised by SPTO at the International Menéndez Pelayo University.

The course addressed modifications made to legislation, based on entry into force of the Patent Law and publication of the EU Directive reforming Trademark Law.

Participating in the sessions were representatives from European Industrial Property Institutions, the European Patent Office (EPO) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), who spoke about protecting innovations in a global economy.

The second session explained the differences between Industrial Property, Patents, Trademarks and Industrial Designs, and Intellectual Property.

During following sessions, firstly, inventions and the new Patent Law were addressed, emphasising the course taken by Spanish innovation. The next day was focused on aesthetic innovations: on one hand, the future EU directive on design protection, and on the other, Industrial Design trends. This intense week on Industrial Property was culminated by Trademarks, referencing both European legislation bearing on this matter and the Internet's relationship with Trademarks.

In addition to speakers from SPTO itself, public sector agents from the Office of Culture and Tourism of the Community of Madrid and the University of Alcalá de Henares contributed. The private sector was represented by the Cotec Foundation for Innovation, the law firm Bardaji & Honrado, and the industrial designer Antonio Monturiol.

All of the sessions were closed with a round table, open to debate for attendees.
