The SPTO 2017-2020 Strategic Plan on the subject of Industrial Property

The 2017-2020 Strategic Plan on Industrial Property (IP) is an initiative by the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, an independent public body. The Plan sets out to establish Industrial Property as a tool and key factor in the everyday decision-making processes of companies and entrepreneurs and create a true IP-based knowledge culture.

New products, trademarks and designs are appearing on the market practically every day, the result of the continuous process of innovation and creativity. We are seeing a change of economic model based on knowledge in which the SPTO seeks to play an active and decisive role in providing tools to give a competitive edge and information on IP issues, enabling our companies to stand out in global markets. Effective Industrial Property management allows companies to use their intangible assets to make them more competitive and increase their market share. Enabling this management, growing the Industrial property culture and eliminating administrative and financial boundaries and obstacles are, therefore, one of the key objectives of this 4-year Plan.

The SPTO works in support of making Industrial Property a key factor in the everyday decision-making process in the business sphere and to achieve this, IP knowledge must be acquired by providing training for our students at an earlier stage. This means that the SPTO needs to build relationships with strategic partners who take the same innovative approach and vision for the future.

The 27 measures outlined in the Plan are aimed at promoting the differentiation, specialisation and better performance of the Spanish production system. The Plan sets out to improve the competitive position of our companies in global markets through the strategic use of instruments that protect Industrial Property (IP). This applies in particular to small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and entrepreneurs, who are not only the driving force moving our economy forward, but also the leading contributors to job creation.

This Plan is part of the Europe 2020 Strategy for a sustainable economy, which addresses reforms leading to a new model for growth based on a smart, sustainable and inclusive economy with high levels of employment, productivity and social cohesion, and its objective is to promote enterprise. The project combines effort and coordinates actions in the various spheres concerning IP: industry, trade, education, dissemination, training, research, justice and external action.
