Madrid joins the European Network of Authenticities with the SPTO

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (SPTO) and the Madrid City Council signed last December the agreement that includes the city of Madrid in the European Network of Authenticities.

In this way, within the framework of the European Cooperation Project (ECP8) 'European Network of Authenticities', the city of Madrid became the sixth certified 'Authenticity' of the network, after Thessaloniki, Sofia, Plovdiv, Mykonos and Banská Bystrica. The slogan "The authentic is eternal" is the common denominator of the project.

The purpose of the agreement is to declare the city of Madrid as Authenticity in order to promote awareness of the value of Industrial Property and the negative impact of counterfeiting, as well as favoring the fight against it at the local level, taking advantage of the tools available in this field and the closeness with the citizen that the municipality presents.

This implies, as a minimum, the following package of activities to be carried out during the next two years:

  • A launch event in the media that includes the City Council, the SPTO and the representatives of the selected sectors.
  • A public awareness campaign on the value of Industrial Property and/or the impact of counterfeit goods and services.
  • Training of local authorities.
  • Educational activities in schools, institutes or universities through, mainly, awareness days.

For more information, you can read Resolution of January 3, 2022, of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, OA, by which the Agreement with the Madrid City Council is published, for its incorporation to the European Network of Authenticities.

Starting with the aforementioned activities, on March 4 Madrid was presented as "Autenticity" in an act held at the Palacio de Cibeles, and in which the following representatives of the public sphere participated: Concepción Díaz de Villegas, General Director of Commerce and Hospitality of the Madrid City Council; Miguel Ángel Redondo Rodríguez, Delegate of the Government Area of Economy, Innovation and Employment; Pablo Garde Lobo, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism (MINCOTUR); José Antonio Gil Celedonio, Director of the SPTO; Sandris Laganovskis, Director of the EUIPO Institutional and Cooperation Department; and Gerard Guiu Ribé, General Director of the Association for the Defense of the Trademark (ANDEMA).

The closing of the event fell on the Undersecretary of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, and President of the SPTO, who recognized Madrid as a key city of the Network of Authenticities for the fight against counterfeiting and the visibility of public policies. In his words, “Together we are stronger”.
