The European patent system allows applicants to seek protection by submitting a direct European patent application with designation in the European member states party to the European Patent Convention and for which protection is sought.
European patent applications can be presented to the SPTO, but they are processed by the European Patent Office. The granting of a European patent produces the same effect as a national patent but in each of the member states for which protection is granted.
