Can business ideas be protected by patents?

Article 4 of the Patents Act specifically excludes the concept of patentability in relation to “plans, rules and methods, etc. for the conduct of economic-business activities...” In the Spanish Patent Office, business ideas cannot be protected, as they are not inventions with industrial application, i.e., devices, mechanisms, instruments, products, etc. that are manufactured by a company.
