The SPTO is a member of important international organisations dealing with industrial property.
Since 1995 the SPTO has been operating as the International Patent Search Office within the framework of the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). It is the only one of the ten offices that performs searches in Spanish.
The Spanish Patent and Trade Mark Office was recently appointed by WIPO as the International Preliminary Examining Authority for patent applications presented in accordance with the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This now enables Spanish-speaking applicants to carry out all international procedures relating to a patent application in Spanish, thereby saving money and cutting down on paperwork.
The SPTO is also a member of the main international organisations dedicated to industrial property matters and plays an active role on the boards of these organisations.
