The present invention is based on the finding that bacterial Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) of bacterial strains belonging to the Bacillus genus have an insect repellent activity and can accordingly be used as insect repellents. In particular the VOCs released by blends of such Bacillus strains comprising at least one Bacillus aerius strain, showed a repellent activity against insects like Anopheles gambiae s. s. and Aedes aegypti. It is accordingly an object of the present invention to provide the use of VOCs of bacterial strains belonging to the Bacillus genus as insect repellents. It further provides the use of bacterial strains belonging to the Bacillus genus as insect repellents, in particular the use of Bacillus aerius strains as insect repellents. It also provides the use of blends of bacterial strains belonging to the Bacillus genus as insect repellents, in particular blends comprising at least one Bacillus aerius strain. In a further embodiment, the present invention provides insect repellent compositions comprising blends of bacterial strains belonging to the Bacillus genus, or of the VOCs thereof.

Clonostachys rosea strains have novel usefulness as inoculants of plants promoting plant vigor, health, growth, yield and a reduction of competitive stress caused by other fungi when used alone or sequentially with many fungicides in an integrated pest management system (IPM). Seed and foliar uses are shown to inoculate and subsequently achieve endophytic colonization of the portion of the plant treated. While the germinating conidia of this organism has been shown to tolerate several fungicide groups, the established mycelium of Clonostachys rosea is significantly more tolerant to systemic fungicides facilitating use in seed and foliar applications. Seed treatment and colonization may occur at any time after harvest resulting in endophyte enhanced seed that ignores or is marginally altered by other fungal organisms and may be suitable for Feed, Food and Seed uses.

Examples of such disease-causing microorganisms are Mycosphaerella fijensis causing black Sigatoka disease in Cavendish (banana), Ralstonia solanacearum causing Moko disease in Cavendish (banana), Lasiodiplodia theobromae causing soft rot or fruit rot in crops and fruits, Fusarium oxysporum causing Panama wilt in fruits and crops, and many others. The composition is a fermented product of tropical plants, carbon source, protein (nitrogen) source, and a carrier agent. The fermented product may help strengthen the plant's immune system to fight pathogenic diseases. Since all the major constituents of the composition are generally regarded as safe, this natural pesticide is found to be non-toxic and safe to humans and animals, and environmentally benign.
