Dans le domaine des énergies marines renouvelables, le corrélateur de vagues est un étage amont qui transforme une hydrolienne en dispositif houlomoteur. Les pressions dynamiques des vagues sont captées sur de larges superficies et protégées par des collecteurs rigides pour se propager vers un convertisseur d'énergie où elles corrèlent leurs effets. Les flux externes aspirent également par viscosité les flux internes ayant cédé leur énergie. Hormis le convertisseur, seuls des clapets d'admission et d'échappement sont mobiles au rythme des vagues (périodicités de 7 à 14 secondes) ; l'incompressibilité des liquides permet la propagation dans les collecteurs sans aucune pièce mécanique. Le maillage des clapets est fin par rapport à la longueur d'onde des vagues. Le corrélateur captera la composante principale du flux : horizontale au fond de la mer, verticale entre deux eaux à proximité de la surface.
