Methods of culturing microalgae mixotrophically with an increased productivity through an increase in oxygen transfer to the culture, and controlling bacterial contamination with an oxidative agent are also described. By supplying light for between 10-16 hours in each 24 hour day and supplying no light for the remaining 8-14 hours in the same 24 hour day, microalgae can be cultured in non-axenic mixotrophic conditions with increased productivity compared to a continuous light supply and with less bacterial contamination.
