An edible film composition for a packaged dosage form comprises a film forming substance which comprises at least one cellulose derivative or cellulose based polymer or polysaccharide polymer or starches; at least one plasticizer; and water. The edible film may comprise at least one flavouring agent and at least one colouring agent and the film may disintegrate, or dissolve without leaving substantial residue which needs to be swallowed or ejected from the mouth. A ready to use dosage composition may be wrapped within the edible film, which may have a thickness in the range between 1 to 30 microns. A method for preparing the edible film composition and dosage form comprises adding cellulose derivative and water in a reaction vessel under continuous stirring conditions to obtain a homogenous mixture; adding plasticizer, flavouring agent and colouring agent to the homogenous mixture to obtain a second homogenous mixture; de-aerating the second homogenous mixture under vacuum; coating the de-aerated mixture on a polyethylene (PET) substrate and drying using hot air; and peeling the coated film to obtain the edible film composition. The film may be shredded to make edible glitters or flavouring films.
