Awareness campaign against counterfeits OEPM 2021

The new awareness campaign against the purchase of counterfeit products this year seeks to stimulate the purchase of original products. On November 26, the official presentation ceremony took place by Minister Reyes Maroto, accompanied by the President of the SPTO Pablo Garde and its Director, José Antonio Gil Celedonio. In their speeches, they highlighted the commitment of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism with the defense of industrial property rights (IPR) and the fight against their violation.

The objective of this campaign is to educate consumers to buy original products due to the positive side effects that it entails: boosts local commerce, fosters innovation, protects the environment, reactivates the economy, takes care of health, protects your rights as a consumer. and generates quality employment. With the slogan Buy original products, it has positive side effects, the campaign is broadcast in the media between December 10 and 20, coinciding with the annual peak of consumption in homes due to the proximity of Black Friday and Christmas.

The campaign will be present on television, radio, press, internet, as well as on social networks with the hashtag #efectossecundarios.

This campaign is one of the Projects of the Strategic Plan 21-24 of the SPTO included within General Objective 4: Promote the fight against counterfeiting and the infringement of Industrial Property rights (IPR).

There is a solid and positive relationship between the ownership of different types of IPR and the economic results of companies (Study EUIPO / EPO: Intellectual property rights and firm performance in the EU). Companies that own at least one IPR generate, on average, 20% more revenue per employee than companies that do not own any of these IPRs. It is also found that these IPR holders pay, on average, salaries 19% higher than those of other companies.

Counterfeiting contributes to the destruction of direct jobs, by reducing sales, and produces unwanted effects in areas such as social or consumer health and safety, since counterfeit products are produced without controls. and timely inspections that guarantee its commercialization and subsequent use.

Right on the opposite side to counterfeits is legal trade. It generates an economic flow that helps neighborhoods, towns and cities to prosper economically and socially. If there is a market, more, more innovative and competitive brands can be created that offer better products, more varied and at better prices. Regarding the life of the neighborhoods and towns, they activate the economy: more premises are rented, the area revalues and improves transport and public services. Legal trade also produces employment, not only in the trade itself, but also in related sectors, such as transport, distribution, cleaning, hospitality, management and a long etcetera. In addition, all this activity generates the payment of taxes that return to the consumer in the form of public services - such as health or education, pensions and social improvements. This responds to the slogan chosen for the SPTO campaign to raise awareness against counterfeits this year: Buying original products has positive side effects.
