The thermal energy obtained by means of the solar collector (2) is used for generating electrical energy and for distilling surrounding water (9). By means of the distilled water (10) produced, first the heat engine (4) is cooled and then the distilled water (10) containing the residual heat is broken down electrolytically into hydrogen and oxygen. The solar installation and the process are suitable in particular for autonomous use in sunny coastal regions. The solar installation and the process for producing hydrogen can also be used for obtaining salt and oxygen.

A suspension is spray coated onto a substrate. The suspension comprises a colourant (dye) and binder, uniformly dispersed in a solvent. The majority of the solvent evaporates during the spray coating process. The ration of colourant to binder is > 40%. The formed coating has a density ≤ 0.75 g/cm3 and thickness ≥ 30 µm. The colourant does not contain carbon nanotubes. Preferably, the colourant comprises carbon black, or black spinel, titania, iron oxide, manganese oxide or mixed metal oxide particles. Preferably, the binder comprises a vinyl acetate or acrylic polymer. Preferably, the solvent comprises ethyl, propyl or butyl acetate, acetone, methyl or isopropyl ethyl ketone, cyclopentanone, 2-hexanone, methanol, ethanol or dimethyl carbinol. Preferably, the coated substrate is subjected to plasma etching and then plasma coated with a mixture of carbon tetrafluoride (CF4) and ethylene (C2H4). Preferred plasma conditions, flow rates, ratios, sizes and viscosities are specified. The coated substrates are used in imaging systems, calibration targets, scientific instruments, light guides, baffles, stray light suppression, charged coupled devices and microbolometers.
