The invention disclosed herein is a process of obtaining starch betainate, a more biodegradable alternative to cationic starch ethers. Starch betainate is obtained by transesterification in solution with an aprotic solvent or in a dry medium with a ball mill. Betaine hydrochloride is first esterified with thionyl chloride and methanol. The starch is then converted to starch betainate in aprotic solvents, using a strong acid as a catalyst or a pre- activation of the polymer in a basic medium. Regarding the transesterification in a dry medium, this pre-activation of the polymer is also carried out in a basic medium, while in an acid medium only a solid acid is used in the reaction. The invention also relates to the use of the starch betainate obtained by the presented process in the production of paper material, as well as to any paper material that includes the starch betainate produced by the process described in this invention.
