You can register second level (under the ".es" code) or third level (under any of the following codes: .com.es, .nom.es, .org.es, .edu.es and .gob.es) domain names, subject to different schemes. The regulations on second level names offers the business owner a high degree of security and the requirements for registering a name are more restrictive than for third levels domains. The third level has less demands and requirements that make it much easier to register than in the second level.

El 1 de Junio de 2005 entró en vigor la Orden Ministerial ITC/1542/2005, de 19 de mayo, por la que se aprueba el Plan Nacional de Nombres de dominio de Internet bajo el Código correspondiente a España (".es"). y en el mismo se establece el marco normativo de los distintos tipos de nombres de dominio bajo ".es".
