Positions in the SPTO for patent examiners and lawyers

The requirements for filling nine vacancies on the Scale of Higher Graduates for Autonomous Bodies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism (specialising in Industrial Property) were published in the Official State Bulletin (BOE) number 163 of 9 July 2015. The selected candidates will work as patent examiners or lawyers in the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). Seven of the positions are in technical areas –mechanics (3), electricity (2) and computing (2)– and two in the legal office.

Requirements and process
Candidates for the technical areas are required to be qualified engineers, architects or graduates in the appropriate experimental or technical scientific field. Candidates for the legal positions must be graduates in Law.

The selection process will begin with a competitive examination involving four sections, and the successful candidates will then undergo a period as trainees. The competitive examination will assess knowledge of the syllabus as well as language skills. English is essential.

The syllabus for the technical areas includes 129 subjects relating to General Administrative Law, the Legal Regime for Industrial Property at national, regional, European and international levels, and to the specific technical specialisations –electricity, mechanics and computing– one of which must be chosen by candidates. The syllabus for the lawyer positions includes 135 subject areas relating to General Administrative Law and the Legal Regime for Industrial Property at national, regional, European and international levels.

Applications must be made within 20 calendar days after 10 July.

The results of the competitive examination process will be published in the Employment section of the SPTO website. The first exercise is expected to take place during the first two weeks of December.
