We launched a roadmap for 2021-2024 with our Strategic Plan of the SPTO!

Preparing for the future with enthusiasm and the aim of being a more modern, sustainable, digital, innovative, transparent company that is close to Spain´s citizens, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (SPTO) has recently published and presented its Strategic Plan 2021-2014 (hereinafter PE 2021-2024). The Plan was published in a ceremony chaired by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, Ms. Reyes Maroto Illera, by the Undersecretary of MINCOTUR and President of the OEPM, Mr. Pablo Garde Lobo and by the Director of the SPTO, José A. Gil Celedonio.

Commitment of the Government of Spain to Intellectual and Industrial Property rights as mechanisms to stimulate creation, innovation, and technological and scientific development

On April 20, 2021, the Council of Ministers have approved an Institutional Declaration to commemorate the World Intellectual-Industrial Property Day that is celebrated on April 26. This has been an initiative of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) and the General Directorate of Cultural Industries, Intellectual Property and Cooperation and a proposal from the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism along with the Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation and the Ministry of Science and Innovation.

The dangerous cycle of counterfeits

Industrial property crimes refer to the infringement of industrial property rights duly registered with the SPTO, with the knowledge that an infringement is being carried out, with the intention of infringing the registered right and for profit. Such a form of infringement is known in commonly as forgery. The significance of counterfeits lies in the fact that the identification and guarantee functions of industrial property rights are violated, mainly the trademark. Very often, these are not isolated offenses but are committed by organized criminal groups, which are also active in other serious crime areas.

El año 2020 supuso para emprendedores y pequeñas y medianas empresas, motor de nuestra economía, un año difícil de afrontar ante la parálisis y/o ralentización del sector económico, consecuencia de la pandemia por COVID19. En este escenario en que la recuperación económica de muchas pymes es una necesidad, el Día Mundial de la Propiedad Intelectual-Industrial 2021 (DMPI-2021) quiere apoyar a este sector y visibilizar cómo el uso de los derechos de PI puede ayudar a impulsar su crecimiento y un desarrollo económico sostenible. El lema elegido este año para tal conmemoración, el 26 de abril del 2021, ha sido “PI y pymes: para que las ideas lleguen al mercado”.
