‘Operation Kilo’ at the OEPM

In December, the OEPM organised a food collection called “Operation Kilo”. This initiative was warmly received by the OEPM staff and, in just three days, 458 kilos of food were collected and passed on to the Food Bank on 17 December 2012.

Food supplied this way is distributed among more than 400 destinations within the Region of Madrid including residential homes, soup kitchens, care activities, etc. The donation aims to help alleviate the suffering of many people who have to survive on very limited resources, a situation which has been aggravated by the current economic crisis.

What is the Food Bank?
The Madrid Food Bank is a non-profit organisation that collects free gifts of food which is then donated and distributed among officially-recognised charities caring for those in need (the mentally and physically disabled, old people and children in a situation of social exclusion, marginalised families, drug addicts in rehabilitation, the ill, etc.) within the Region of Madrid.

Over one hundred volunteers work for it regularly, most of them retired professionals who offer their management know-how and technical and manual skills for free. There are also several hundred other people who are part-time collaborators.

The Madrid Food Bank, founded on 1 September 1994, is a member of the Spanish Federation of Food Banks, which currently includes about 50 organisations, and through it is also a member of the European Federation of Food Banks.
