Cotec 2013 Report: Technology and Innovation in Spain

Since 1996, the COTEC Foundation has been publishing an annual Report on Technology and Innovation in Spain, giving data and describing the most significant activities in this connection, with the opinions of a panel of experts on innovation. According to this year’s report, about 25% of companies performing R&D activities in 2008 was no longer doing so by 2011. Only 60% of companies with 10-49 employees which have not yet completed their process of consolidation are still doing research and development. On the other hand, microenterprises (with less than 10 employees) have increased such activities as most of them are essentially technology-based firms.

Protected by patents and utility models
Innovation resulting from R&D activities in the Spanish technological system is protected by patents or utility models with the aim of increasing the value added to knowledge generation and as a strategic tool for internationalisation. According to OEPM data, over the last decade, there was a 10% increase in European patent applications from Spain, which compares with a 3% increase in European applications in general. International applications via PCT that designate Spain have grown by 10% in comparison with growth on a worldwide level of 7%, although the rise was slightly lower in 2011 because of the crisis.

The report also states that various technological sectors place Spain in leading positions internationally. One such is electricity generation using photovoltaic or wind energy.
