Published two new numbers of the IBEPI Technology Surveillance Bulletins on Wind Power and Agro-food sectors

Strategic use of Industrial Property

The Ibero-American Industrial Property Programme (IBEPI) is a project whose goal is to promote the strategic use of Industrial Property as a tool for the competitiveness and the industrial, commercial and research development at Ibero-America. It is a regional project launched by the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) with the support of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Currently, 14 countries from the region are part of the programme, represented by the Industrial Property National Offices of Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay.

In the second semester of 2017 the IBEPI published two new numbers of its Technology Surveillance Bulletins on Wind power and Agro-food sectors. They include data on patent applications as well as news and application lists.

The Bulletin on Wind Power, the fourth of its series, collects 255 patent applications published in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. These applications were submitted by 103 applicants, 79 of them were companies, 20 individuals, 2 universities and 2 research centres. The most active company was Vestas Wind SYS AS. Regarding the origin of the applicants, the 90% of the applications correspond to non-residents at the IBEPI countries, being the countries with a higher number of applications Denmark, Germany and United States. Among the IBEPI countries, the list is led by Spain.

The Bulletin on Agro-foods, the seventh of its series, gathers patent applications published in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay in the preservation, biotechnology and new products sectors. The 1218 patent applications published were submitted by 673 applicants, the 76% of them were companies and the rest individuals, universities and research centres. The most active company was the Swiss Nestec S.A. As for the origin of the applicants, the United States had the largest number of applications, followed from afar by Switzerland. Among the IBEPI countries, the list is led by Brazil, followed by Spain.

Analysing the results, it is quite obvious that, although the advances are huge, it is still necessary to work in this line to achieve greater progresses in patent applications within the IBEPI countries. From the SPTO we will continue working actively to make it possible.
