International cooperation to support Latin American SMEsInternational cooperation to support Latin American SMEs At the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (SPTO) we are aware of the importance of international cooperation. Therefore, one of the projects of the 2025-2027 strategic plan focuses on strengthening ties with Latin America to promote alliances and strengthen the use of IP in Spanish. Within this framework, the AECID seminar “New role for IP offices: Support for SMEs in Latin America. Promotion of commercialization and alternative dispute resolution”. 15 National Industrial Property (IP) Offices have participated in this course in a very active way, giving rise to an interesting exchange of experiences and knowledge. The different initiatives carried out to bring industrial property closer to SMEs were presented, focusing, on the one hand, on the promotion of alternative dispute resolution and, on the other hand, on promoting the commercialization and transfer of technology. In addition to the National Offices, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) participated in the course, focusing on arbitration and mediation. In the area of commercialization and technology transfer, LES Spain Portugal and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) participated.
The SPTO, WIPO, CSIC and LES Spain Portugal are part of a working group that has developed technology transfer contracts models, which are available through the SPTO website.
