"Protect your ideas”: a patent teaching kit

The workshop called “Protect your ideas – Lecturing with the patent teaching kit” took place on November 27, 2009 at the University of Alcalá de Henares and was organized by the European Patent Academy , the University of Alcalá de Henares and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO).

The workshop forms part of a Project at the European level whose aim is that of integrating industrial property into the Plans of university studies.

Material put together by the European Patent Academy was presented during the workshop, which was specifically designed to help university professors teach Industrial Property, and in particular, the patent system.

The material was designed by university professors and contains all the information necessary for introducing university students to the patent system, including information on how to register a patent and how to look for patents that have already been registered.

The material is presented in Power Point format and contains two central modules and three sub-modules: one of the two central modules is aimed at students of Science, Engineering, Medicine and Economics, and the other is especially designed for Law students.

The three sub-models consist of:

•  Searching for patents that are already registered: how to use the esp@cenet database.

•  Patent claims.

•  The use of patents by spin-off companies.
