Signature of the LATIPAT Agreement

On Thursday 4 October, the LATIPAT Agreement was signed in Geneva by Francis Gurry, Director General of the World Industrial Property Organisation (WIPO), Benoît Battistelli, President of the European Patents Office (EPO) and Patricia García-Escudero, Director General of the Spanish Patents and Trademark Office (OEPM). Its aim is to strengthen cooperation in patents in the Spanish language with Latin American countries.

Also present on the occasion were representatives of the main Latin American Industrial Property offices, for whom LATIPAT has become an essential tool for making their inventions known and for achieving more effective compliance and greater respect for their patents.

The Latin American countries covered by the agreement are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru and Uruguay.

Promotion of LATIPAT
The signature of this Agreement gives added impetus to LATIPAT so that it can continue being the leading data base on patents in Latin America, with OPEM continuing to manage it. The agreement was signed during the WIPO Assemblies, which took place from 1 to 9 October this year.
