Report on Activities 2013

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) has published its Report on Activities for 2013. Important actions and initiatives have been adopted during the year with the aim of consolidating the Industrial Property culture. It is essential to strengthen our business fabric by protecting and providing information on intangible assets in order to support decisions taken by entrepreneurs, companies and SMEs, the main agents in the economic context.

In figures
During 2013, the SPTO processed 3,133 national patents, 2,633 utility models – which have increased by 4.1% since 2000, and 78 Supplementary Protection Certificates, and 18,717 European patents were received for validation. The total figures were 1,622 European patents and 1,673 PCT patents originating in Spain.

Regarding trademarks, 46,904 applications for national trademarks were received, 5,759 for trade names and 3,157 for international trademarks. For designs, there were 1,826 applications, which amounted to a 14% increase, the largest percentage increase since industrial designs were first granted under the law of 2003.
