PPH agreement between Spain and Morocco

On 16 May, a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed for a Patent Prosecution Highway between the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) and the Moroccan Office of Industrial and Commercial Property (OMPIC). The signature took place during Casablanca IP Week, held to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Industrial Property in Morocco.

This Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH) agreement will allow an SPTO applicant to ask for fast-track processing in the Moroccan OMPIC provided that the claims of the application have already been considered “patentable” by the SPTO. The idea is to facilitate the sharing of information between the offices, to avoid duplication of efforts and to speed up granting procedures. This should result in a better and faster service for applicants.

This PPH programme will enter into force on 1 June 2016. Its initial two-year duration can be automatically extended for further two-year periods, as desired by the parties.
