Conclusions about the course of UIMP: Innovation, Patents and Internationalisation Entrepreneurial
The new edition of the course organized by SPTO and Universidad Internacional Menéndez y Pelayo on Industrial Property was held in July in Santander. This fourth edition was dedicated to: Innovation, Patents and Internationalisation Entrepreneurial.
The course was inaugurated by the Deputy-Secretary of Industry, Tourism, and Trade, the Chairman of Oficina de Armonización del Mercado Interior (Office for the Harmonisation of the Internal Market, Spanish acronym OAMI), the Chairman of the European Patent Office (EPO), and the General Director of SPTO. During the course, the OAMI chairman discussed the importance of the brand and the internationalisation of companies while the Chairman of EPO stressed how innovation and patents are the gateways for accessing the European Market.
Main conclusions
The importance of IP in this globalised world and the positioning of Spanish companies in the current competitive international scenario were highlighted, both from the perspective of family-owned companies (MANGO) as well as from the standpoint of Spanish Multinationals (Observatorio de la Empresa Multinacional Española (Observatory of the Spanish Multinational Company, Spanish acronym OEME).
The representatives of various Spanish entities, such as the Executive Vice-Chairman of ICEX, the representative of ENISA, and the General Director of OEPM spoke on the measures taken at the national level to encourage the internationalisation of Spanish companies, either supporting the export sector, funding Spanish technology abroad, or subsidising the protection of Spanish innovations abroad.
Other subjects discussed included the conflicts in Industrial Property due to internationalisation processes as well as the possible ways of resolving these conflicts in courts or through arbitration, aspects which were developed by the former chairman of the Spanish Court of Arbitration and one of the members of the law firm Ferrandis & Partners.
Other well-known Spanish companies with a long tradition in internationalisation, such as Freixenet and Grupo Cosentino, the manufacturer of Silestone, contributed by discussing their corporate experience.
