Vacancies for patent examiners

The conditions for the selection process to fill five vacancies for Higher Specialists for Autonomous Bodies of the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism (in the technical branch of Industrial Property) have been published in the Official State Bulletin no.212 of 1 September 2014. The selected candidates will work as patent examiners for the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). Three of the positions are for the mechanical field and two for the electrical field.

Requirements and process
Candidates are required to hold an official qualification as engineer or architect, or to hold a degree in experimental or technical science.

The selection process comprises competitive examinations involving four exercises followed, for those who pass, by a period of practical work. The examinations assess knowledge of the programme and of languages. English is essential.

The programme for the competitive examination covers a total of 127 subjects in the fields of General Administrative Law, the Spanish and Community Legal Regimes for Industrial Property and specific subjects for the electrical and mechanical branches, one of which must be chosen by each candidate.

Applications must be sent in within twenty calendar days after 1 September.
The selections for the competitive examination process will be published in the “Empleo” section of the SPTO web site.

What role will they play?
Patent examiners are responsible for processing applications in their respective technical branches through the various stages of the procedure up to granting of patents. The SPTO’s relations with other national and international Industrial Property offices afford higher specialists with opportunities for employment and training in prestigious international organisations.
