First Marcathlon: The Trademark Race

On Saturday 26 April, World Intellectual Property Day, brands, associations and institutions came together in the streets of Madrid for the first Marcathlon: the Trademark Race.

The event was free of charge and comprised two activities:

  • Educational games and contests for children in which they learnt about the importance of trademarks and innovation in our lives: they designed their own trademark and printed it on a T-shirt; they learnt about the contributions trademarks make to the Spanish economy and society; and, with the help of the Spanish National Police Force, discovered the damage that can be done by counterfeit trademarks. Much fun was had by the children as they learnt, and they all received gifts supplied by the brands.
  • A 5-kilometre race for adults in the Azca gardens, which started at 12.00 and went smoothly without any incidents. The winner and two runners-up in each category – for men and for women – received a medal and gifts from the brands that made the event possible.

The winners in the men’s category were:

  • 1st: Gorka Apraiz – number 20
  • 2nd: Sergio Asuán López (from the police force) - number 38
  • 3rd: Francisco Rosigne García – number 51

The winners in the women’s category were:

  • 1st: Ana Redondo – number 54
  • 2nd: Mónica Dopico (from the police force) - number 10
  • 3rd: Rocío Pinar – number 62

More than 80 brands, associations, foundations and institutions participated in the event as promoters and supporters. Approximately 160 children signed up for the games and contests, and 250 adults participated in the race.
