The FIT/ES was set up by a Memorandum of Understanding between WIPO and SPTO in July 2004

10th anniversary of the FIT/ES for cooperation with Latin America

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Spanish Fiduciary Fund (FIT/ES) for cooperation with Latin America, an exhibition was held during the 55th series of WIPO General Assemblies.

The exhibition was opened on 6 October by the Director General of WIPO, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Spain to the UN, the Director General of the SPTO and representatives of other international organisations based in Geneva (Switzerland). Also present were the Directors General of the Latin American Industrial Property offices, members of WIPO, of Spain’s Permanent Mission in Geneva and of the delegations of many of the countries that attended the Assemblies.

All those present received a token in celebration of this anniversary in the form of a bottle of olive oil donated for this occasion by Acesur, and a cocktail was served, featuring Spanish wine donated by Bodegas Torres. These products were much appreciated.

Promotion of knowledge on IP rights
The FIT/ES was set up by a Memorandum of Understanding between WIPO and SPTO in July 2004. Its basic aim is to promote knowledge and the use of Industrial Property rights to the benefit of Latin American countries, especially Latin American companies, most of which are SMEs. Over ten years of cooperation, Spain has contributed more than four million Swiss francs to this Fund. Every year, from 180 to 250 professionals benefit from it through various projects such as the CIBEPYME platform, the LATIPAT data base, the Central American trademark and patent manuals, courses and seminars.

From the start, the Fiduciary Fund has followed the guidelines established in the frameworks for cooperation of the Kingdom of Spain and of United Nations. Its definition takes into account the needs of the Latin American countries, and priority is placed on initiatives that aim to strengthen institutions in the region in order to guarantee sustainable development.
