Death of Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa

30 September was marked by the death of Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa, a key name in Spain in the field of Industrial Property law, and an expert on jurisprudence. For 36 years, Fernández-Nóvoa was Professor of Mercantile Law at the University of Santiago de Compostela. He contributed more than 100 scientific publications in Spain and other countries and published the first Industrial Property Manual in Spain. At the time of his death, he was working on its third edition.

In 2011, as a tribute to his work to develop and provide education on Industrial Property, the Escuela de Organizacion Industrial (EOI) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) created the Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property that bears his name.

The aim of the Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property is to coordinate the many activities carried out by both organisations in the field of innovation and Industrial Property, creating new synergies, integrating and coordinating training and dissemination, and establishing a joint platform between the world of business and academe.

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office would like to express its sincere condolences to his family and friends.
