New version of INVENES

On February 24, production began on the new version of the inventions and designs database in Spanish: INVENES.

This database of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) is the successor to the OEPM traditional systems of searching for patents, utility models and designs, as was the case with CIBEPAT and OEPMPAT.

Just like these previous tools, which had CD ROM and Internet versions, INVENES covers two functions: on the one hand, helping OEPM patent examiners in their work in searching for previously filed information and examining new applications; and on the other, providing researchers, students, inventors and the general public access to practically the same information technology resources for researching Spanish patents, in the Spanish language, as that used by staff at the OEPM, in a robust, simplified and very powerful version.

INVENES is made up of three different databases:

  • INTERPAT: Information related to bibliographies and documents of Patents and Utility Models. It contains more than one million references, including patents and Spanish models conceded under the former Industrial Property Statute and the 1986 Patent Law, European patents with consequences in Spain and PCT applications published in the Spanish language.
  • LATIPAT: Information related to bibliographies and Ibero-American Patent documents, with almost half a million references.
  • DESIGNS: Information on Industrial Designs, with approximately 150,000 references.

The database CLAIND is also included in INVENES, for consulting the Locarno Classification of Industrial Designs, with the list of key words.

Not only does INVENES provide the complete patent document, including all publications on each one (application, concession, Technique Status Reports, etc.), but it also provides -except for EPI documents, which were digitalized as images- the complete text, which can searched. In the case of designs, it's possible to search the entire description, along with viewing images of the applied for designs.

This new version, along with the addition of several internal improvements, includes a very versatile interface and a more flexible way of presenting results adapted to the needs of each user.

The new INVENES version incorporates a simple search screen, which allows those users who are not very familiar with the database, patent searching or designs in general, to recover all documents that comply with search criteria used in a single query line.

Additionally, images of patent documents, utility models and industrial designs in multipage TIFF format have been replaced with PDF files, this way eliminating the need for a specific viewer for the images.

Just like most databases, INVENES accepts:

  • Truncations (Example: P2005+, Ronce+, bicycl+).
  • Logical operators (Y, O, NO, Example: boat and sail, boat or sail, boat not sail).
  • Parenthesis (Example: boat and (sail+ or motor)).
  • Wildcard character “?”, which substitutes any letter or number present in the term (Example: boat? and (sail+ or motor)).
  • “$” Character to search for a term in singular or plural at the same time (Example: boat$).
