New positions for examiners, computer specialists and legal experts at the SPTO

The rules for the process to fill twelve positions on the Scale of Higher Graduates for MITIC (Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade), specialising in Industrial Property, were published in Official State Bulletin number 163 of 7 July 2016. The candidates selected will work as patent examiners, computer specialists or legal experts within the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). Eight of the positions will be in technical areas –mechanics (3), electricity (3) and computer science (2)– and four in legal areas.
Requirements and the process
The official qualification required for candidates for the technical areas is a degree in engineering, architecture, or in experimental or technical sciences. For the legal area, applicants must have a degree in Law.
The selection process involves a competitive examination made up of four exercises and, for those who pass, a period of practical work experience. The examination covers the syllabus plus language skills, with English being essential.
The syllabus for the competitive examination comprises, for the technical areas, a total of 135 topics in the fields of General Administrative Law and Spanish, European and international Industrial Property legislation, as well as specific topics for each specialist area –electricity, mechanics and IT– one of which must be chosen by candidates. The legal syllabus comprises 135 topics on General Administrative Law and Spanish, European and international legislation on Industrial Property.
The registration (electronic or in person) must be submitted within twenty calendar days as from 8 July.
The results of the competitive examination process will be published in the Employment section on the SPTO website. The first exercise is expected to take place during the first half of December.
