Possibility of performing image-based searches of Spanish trademarksAvailable at TMView and eSearch plus The correct previous investigation of a trademark is vital to succeed in an application. The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) offers various free consultation tools that simplify the task. In particular, in the world of trademarks there are two essential databases: TMView, which allows to verify the availability of trademarks, search for products and services protected by them or receive updates on their state evolution (name changes, opposition period ending...), and eSearch plus, which offers comprehensive information about trademarks, designs, owners, representatives and bulletins, and which allows to combine multiple search criteria such as trademark names, keywords, Vienna and Nice classifications... Up till now these databases only allowed to perform text-based searches, so the graphic appearance of trademarks was almost unreachable. Luckily, with the new algorithm launched by EUIPO it is possible to perform image-based searches and, therefore, to analyse colours, shapes and textures. In this way, a trademark can be analysed 360º, finding other trademarks with a similar look or the same colour. Performing image-based searches is very simple, to make it work just press the camera icon, it will open a dialog box where to drag and drop the image or to upload it from the computer. The compatible formats for the images are jpg, png, gif and tif. The system foresees the possibility of selecting one image in the case of trademarks and up to seven in the case of designs. Thanks to this project, in which the SPTO has actively cooperated, it is now possible to perform image-based searches in a simple and fast way of 873,598 valid trademarks with effect in Spain and published since 1897.
