Zaragoza joins the European Network of Authenticities

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (SPTO) and the Zaragoza City Council have signed the agreement that includes the city of Zaragoza in the European Network of Authenticities.

In this way, within the framework of the European Cooperation Project (ECP8) 'European Network of Authenticities', the city of Zaragoza becomes a certified 'Authenticity' of the network, after Madrid, Thessaloniki, Sofia, Plovdiv, Mykonos and Banská Bystrica. The slogan "The authentic is eternal" is the common denominator of the project.

The purpose of the agreement is to declare the city of Zaragoza as an Authenticity in order to promote awareness of the value of Industrial Property and the negative impact of counterfeiting. This is also to promote the fight against it at the local level, taking advantage of the tools available in this area and the proximity to the citizen that the municipality presents.

This implies, as a minimum, the following package of activities carried out during the next two years:

  • A launch event in the media that includes the City Council, the SPTO and the representatives of the selected sectors
  • A public awareness campaign on the value of Industrial Property and/or the impact of counterfeit goods and services
  • Training of local authorities
  • Educational activities in schools, institutes or universities through, mainly, awareness days

On December 20th  the presentation of Zaragoza as "Authenticity" took place in an act held in the Town Hall Reception Hall, and in which the following representatives of the public sphere participated: Carmen Herrarte Cajal, Counselor of Economy, Innovation and Employment of the Zaragoza City Council, Aída Fernández González, Director of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. and Christian Archambeau, EUIPO Executive Director.

In their interventions, the importance of the commitment of municipal representatives to the fight against the sale of counterfeit products was highlighted. Counterfeits are a scourge that not only destroy jobs and are controlled by organized mafias, but also put the health of those who consume them at risk. On the other hand, legal local commerce contributes to building a lively, safe, friendly, multifunctional, commercially fair, socially equitable, culturally diverse city that generates stable local employment.

The act ended with a family photo.
