The SPTO returns to the Madrid Book FairThe SPTO returns to the Madrid Book Fair The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) was once again present at the Madrid Book Fair, sharing a stand with the Ministry of Industry and Tourism, in an effort to bring industrial property (IP) closer to the general public. Between May 30 and June 15, 2025, numerous citizens came to inquire about the publications available, which deal with different types of IP, such as trademarks, patents, and designs. Perhaps this growing interest in industrial property was partly motivated by the 10% discount that the Office offered on all publications. The best-selling item at this edition was the book Patentes de invención de Leonardo Torres Quevedo (Patents of Invention by Leonardo Torres Quevedo), an illustrated compilation of all the Spanish patents registered by Spain's most universal engineer. This compendium includes both descriptions and detailed plans of his most spectacular inventions, such as the airship and the cable car. Another success at the Fair was the publication 200 años de patentes (200 Years of Patents), which focuses on the period from the reign of Charles III, the height of the Spanish Enlightenment, to the present day, showing the technological evolution that has taken place in our country. All this is illustrated in more than 100 pages with images related to the history of mining, industry, commerce, services, and electricity in Spain. Visitors were also interested in the book Patentes de invención españolas en el Siglo de Oro (Spanish Invention Patents in the Golden Age), a study that dispels the idea that Spain lacks innovative capacity, going back to this period in our history to discover the role of the first inventors and bring to light the first national patents. Spain not only excelled in the arts and letters, but also devised new techniques in fields such as mining, hydraulics, and navigation. All these publications and many others of great interest for learning about the history of technological development, innovative capacity, and the creativity of our researchers over the centuries are available at the SPTO Historical Archive Store.
