The SPTO renews its agreement with Origen España

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) and the Spanish Association of Designations of Origin (ORIGEN ESPAÑA) have renewed the agreement signed in 2020 to promote competitiveness, innovation, and protection of Spanish industry in the field of agri-food designations of origin. The main objective of this agreement is to facilitate, promote, and stimulate awareness and use of industrial property rights within the sector.

To mark the signing, a training session was held at the OEPM headquarters on November 11, which highlighted that industrial property rights are essential for the agri-food sector to protect the misuse of its designations.

The session was attended by various protected designations of origin (DPOs) and protected geographical indications (IGPs), including the Jabugo DPO and Los Pedroches DPO; Torta del Casar DPO cheese, Manchego DPO cheese, and Tetilla DPO cheese; Mejillón de Galicia DPO; IGP Aceite de Jaén, and IIGGPP Jijona and Turrón de Alicante.

Designations of Origin are signs that protect both producers and consumers. The former are concerned that this distinctive mark is used properly, as it certifies that the products have been made in a specific region, respecting a tradition and know-how that have been perfected over several generations.

In fact, products identified with DPO and IGP quality seals are linked to a specific geographical origin, which gives them unique characteristics. As explained during the conference, industrial property rights are essential for guaranteeing exclusive rights to designations of origin and preventing third parties from exploiting their recognized names, as well as being one of the most important tools available to national farmers to compete.

Furthermore, ORIGEN ESPAÑA's experience in the agri-food sector is extremely valuable in view of the imminent arrival of a new form of protection: Geographical Indications for Artisanal and Industrial Products.
