The OEPM brings Industrial Property closer to SMEs: Agreements

The OEPM brings Industrial Property closer to SMEs: Agreements

The strategic management of industrial property (IP) rights generates significant competitive advantages and a positive economic impact for the companies that implement it. However, the knowledge necessary to make effective use of industrial property is not widely held among spanish SMEs.

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) and the General Council of Economists have agreed to collaborate to reverse this situation, strengthening business competitiveness and fostering innovation among the members of our country’s productive sector.

“From our professional association, we offer our collaboration to promote Industrial Property, a key area for economic and business development, especially among SMEs, where there is not always awareness of its impact on company efficiency,” noted the president of the General Council of Economists.

The agreement, which pays special attention to small and medium-sized enterprises, includes a series of joint initiatives aimed at spreading greater awareness of industrial property among economists and strengthening economic analysis in areas of interest to the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM).

Furthermore, various public administrations are also aware of the importance of collaboration in supporting Spanish companies.

Thus, the OEPM has signed a collaboration agreement with the Agency for Business Competitiveness (ACCIÓ) and the Department of Business and Labor, both of the Government of Catalonia, with the aim of improving the competitiveness of Catalonia’s business sector.

Through this agreement, ACCIÓ is designated as the regional information center for industrial property matters. This entails, among other things, the provision of information services related to patents and other industrial property rights. For its part, the Department of Enterprise and Labor commits to maintaining appropriate information on the procedures under the OEPM’s jurisdiction and to supporting companies and individuals in processing the procedures under the OEPM’s jurisdiction that are handled in Catalonia.

Within the framework of these agreements, these institutions will organize various training activities with the aim of raising awareness of the importance and utility of industrial property and the need to combat counterfeiting.

In addition, they will collaborate on the preparation of technical publications, studies, and reports on topics of interest related to the economy and industrial property.

A monitoring committee will be responsible for identifying new areas of focus and coordinating specific actions for each of the agreements.
