Counterfeits are ruining what we love most On June 11—in less than two months—the FIFA World Cup, the world’s premier official international men’s soccer tournament for national teams, kicks off in Mexico City. As the countdown to this highly anticipated sporting event continues, demand for and trade in sport shirts, including counterfeit ones, is skyrocketing. Reports are beginning to emerge about new operations against counterfeiting, with Hong Kong customs authorities playing a leading role. As part of its strategy to curb illegal trade and protect industrial property rights, one of the most recent actions has led to the seizure of counterfeit sport shirts valued at over half a million dollars. The sports sector remains consistently among the most affected by counterfeiting, with its products ranking year after year among the most copied. In this context, the OEPM is re-releasing the video “Counterfeits Destroy What We Love Most,” which highlights the negative impact of these practices on the economic sustainability and development of sports.
