Workload reduction at the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM)

In June of 2008 the Council of Ministers approved an Administrative Workload Reduction and Regulation Improvement Plan, whose objective is to reduce official procedures involved in certain activities and to contribute to the competitiveness and productivity of Spanish companies. This way, the aim is to reduce 30 % of the workload derived from regulations in force before 2012, and to act in a preventative form on future regulation.

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) has always been committed to the above mentioned reduction. The active commitment of the Office with this process was reflected in the principal strategic lines defined in the 2008-2009 Strategic Plan. This involves: administrative and regulatory simplification on one hand, and procedural simplification on the other; the facilitation of access to procedures, as well as to information; and support and communication measures to companies, in particular to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) that make the rest of the initiatives known.

Along these lines, a package of measures relative to the reduction of workload in managerial procedures for various categories of industrial property was presented to the Council of Ministers for approval :
