Now that the year 2008 has ended, it's now possible to perform a calculation on the applications presented at the OEPM for various modalities of Industrial Property.
National patent applications grew by 10% compared to 2007, where a total of 3,783 applications were registered, whereas European applications (presented in Spain ) suffered a setback of almost 7 %, going from 487 that were received in 2007 to 453 in 2008. On the other hand, PCT application patents presented in our country also grew 6.5%, reaching 1,064.
In terms of applications for utility and design models, these hardly experienced any variation compared to the previous year. On the contrary, Distinctive Signs applications experienced decreases of 14 % in the case of trademarks and 13 % in case of trade names.
By Autonomous Community
In the detailed study carried out by Autonomous Community, there is numerous data that stands out. On one hand, in utility model applications, Asturias appears as one of the regions that experienced more growth in 2008 compared to 2007, placing it around 60%, whereas Castilla y León suffered a setback of 37%. As for national patent applications, Estremadura rose 52% and Castilla-La Mancha placed -15%, which makes it the region with the largest decline in this modality.
On the other hand, the area of national trademarks is one of the registers where the number of applications had a small increase. Consequently, Ceuta and Melilla (-40%), Castilla-La Mancha (-35%) and Murcia (-23%) were the ones that declined the most, while only Cantabria grew by 4.6% during the period that was studied. Regarding the segment of trade names, Navarra registered close to 50% fewer applications, while Castilla y León, with 13.20% and Ceuta y Melilla, with 13% were the ones that grew the most.
Lastly, in the area of industrial design, La Rioja experienced extraordinary growth of 92.86%.
