The Strategic Plan of Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM)

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) has initiated a Strategic Plan for the 2008-2009 period with the objective of having access to a Management tool that enables progress to be made in the current setting. The program can now be consulted on the OEPM website through the following route: Start>Get to Know Us>Who We Are>Objectives and Functions.

The Plan establishes that the Office must direct its efforts in creating a proper framework that contributes to “the modernization of the productive Spanish system to provide it with greater efficiency, competitiveness and productivity in the medium and long term." This way, the activities of the OEPM are in with those of the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade for the promotion and development of new sectors of opportunity for the Spanish industry and the support of traditional productive sectors; areas in which small and medium-sized enterprises (SME's) play an important role.

These initiatives are formed around four lines: to reinforce the quality of procedures in the examination registers and concession of rights to industrial property; to create new support services for the industry and the publication of information contained in the OEPM; to reinforce cooperation within business sectors throughout the process of company internationalization; and to fight against piracy of industrial property rights.

For each one, the Strategic Plan determines a series of strategic lines that lead to concrete initiatives that also reflect which Departments are held responsible.

The implementation of activities established in the Strategic Plan aims to strengthen the environment within which the fabric of Spanish industry develops, and will allow it to reach an improved position within an increasingly diversified and competitive setting.
