Industrial Property in Society: Health, Sports and Environment

The course “Industrial Property in Society: Health, Sports and Environment” was held at the Menéndez Pelayo International University from the 12th to the 16th of July, and whose speeches are now available at the SPTO website.

Organized by the UIMP and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) and inaugurated by the Deputy Secretary for Industry, Tourism and Trade and the Director General of the SPTO, the course is organized through various sessions

During the first session, Antonio Campinos, General Director of the National Institute of Industrial Property of Portugal and incoming President of the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), spoke of European entrepreneurship in times of crisis, and Battisteli Benoit, in his first public intervention since his appointment as President of the European Patent Office, highlighted the role of patents as a factor of competitiveness in Europe.

The second theme focused on Industrial Property and Health, where panelists included Pius Orviz, Director of Intellectual Property for Almirall laboratories, and Margarita Salas, Dr. Ad Honorem of the National Research Council (CSIC), who highlighted the importance of Industrial Property in these areas from the perspective of the pharmaceutical industry and public research.

Sports, SME’s and the Environment
Industrial Property and Sports were the topics of the third session of the Course, whose participation included the Professor of Business Law at the University of Alcalá de Henares, Manuel Otero Lastres, and the CEO of Real Madrid, José Angel Periáñez, who highlighted the role of Industrial Property in sport and, in particular, football clubs.

Another session was dedicated to Industrial Property and SME’s, with the participation of Mikel Garrido, founder of Agotek, S.L., and Jorge Blasco, President of the Board of Sistemas de Silicio and finalist for the European Inventor of the Year Award 2010. Both shared their experiences in building their respective businesses and the role of Industrial Property.

The last session focused on Industrial Property and the Environment, with the contribution of Gonzalo Sáenz de Miera, Director of Prospecting Regulations for Iberdrola, who summarized the current status of renewable energy, particularly in Spain, and the evolution of patents in this area.
