Innovation in Spain in 2014: the figures

After the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) closed its annual statistics, the applications made by users living in Spain during 2014 were analysed. The results suggest that we can be optimistic about 2015.

8.53% more applications for trademarks and trade name
The most outstanding figure in the analysis is the increase in applications for trademarks.
During 2014, the SPTO received 50,057 applications for national trademarks (6.72% more than in 2013) and 7,099 for trade name (23.27% more than in 2013). Taking both together, 8.53% more trademark applications were received than in 2013, indicating that the previous year’s upward trend was continuing.

2.13% more applications for utility models
The drop in the number of applications for national patents was not as marked last year as during the previous two years. There was a total of 3,031 applications, 3.26% less than in 2013 (as opposed to -6.8% for 2012-2013). Applications for utility models, however, increased by 2.13%, with a total of 2,689 applications.

Stability in applications for industrial designs
The number of applications for industrial designs was practically the same as the record figure reached in 2013, the highest since enactment of the Law on Designs of 2003.

In 2014, the number of applications submitted was 1,773, 2.90% less than in 2013 but, if we take the number of designs rather than the number of applications (a single application may contain up to 50 different designs), then 17,948 designs were submitted, which amounts to a difference over 2013 of just -1%.
