Learning from others: The SPTO visits scientific facilities

During the month of February, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) paid visits to the Spanish National Centre for Experimentation in Hydrogen Technologies and Fuel Cells (Centro Nacional de Experimentación de Tecnologías de Hidrógeno y Pilas de Combustible, CNH2) and the IMDEA Nanoscience Institute. Its aim was to learn about cutting-edge scientific work and technologies and to share experiences with these institutions. Such visits enable both scientists and experts in Industrial Property to learn from each other, in a relationship that is positive for all. The initiative has been welcomed and both parties consider it to be very useful.

CNH2
The Spanish National Centre for Experimentation in Hydrogen Technologies and Fuel Cells (CNH2) is an unusual scientific and technical facility created in 2007 as a consortium between what at the time was the MICINN and the Government of Castile-La Mancha. It focuses on promoting such technologies, and comprises laboratories, testing and experimentation equipment as well as scientific facilities for R&D+i. It aims above all to perform experimentation and to validate prototypes and equipment, to develop and scale processes and to approve, certify and verify components and systems.

At the meeting, the SPTO and the CNH2 were able to discuss their organisation and functions and a presentation was given on Industrial Property and Technological Information, followed by a tour of the site. The event closed with both parties expressing the wish to share knowledge in the near future, both because of the interest that hydrogen technologies arouse for carrying energy, and because of the projection that Industrial Property can provide to inventions stemming from the R&D+i activities performed at the CNH2.

IMDEA Nanoscience
The Madrid Institute for Advanced Studies in Nanoscience (IMDEA Nanociencia), located within the UAM-CSIC Campus for International Excellence in Campoblanco, is a multi-disciplinary research centre for studies on nanoscience and for the development of nanotechnological applications in collaboration with innovative enterprises.

The patent examiners had the opportunity to learn from the centre’s researchers about its different research lines, which range from basic research to applied research in areas such as nanomedicine, nanomagnetism, nanomaterials, nanosurfaces and nanoelectronics, and were able to see its extensive scientific infrastructure, designed specifically for this purpose.

As a result of the visit, certain collaborative activities have been set up, including specialist training courses in this scientific discipline given by the Institute’s researchers for patent examiners, as well as training on aspects relating to the protection of technical developments by means of Industrial Property and on the use of patent data bases for the Institute’s researchers, given by patent examiners.
