The SPTO-CRUE agreement will allow to collaborate in making Industrial Property rights known among Spanish businesses and in society in general

On 24 November, the SPTO and the Conference of Rectors of Spanish Universities (CRUE) signed an agreement for collaboration in Industrial Property. The aim is to set up a framework for cooperation between the two institutions in order to facilitate, promote and build up knowledge and the use of Industrial Property rights (Patents, Trademarks and Industrial Designs), while also establishing a two-way channel for communication.

The SPTO-CRUE agreement will allow to collaborate in making Industrial Property rights known among Spanish businesses and in society in general, while gradually including Industrial Property as a subject within academic syllabuses

Participation in the IPICA project
On 14 and 15 November, the SPTO participated in the IPICA project meeting held in Kingston (Jamaica) alongside the fourth Jamaican National Conference on Science, Technology and Innovation: “Stimulus for Health, Wealth and Wellbeing”.

The SPTO is a collaborating partner in the IPICA project, which aims to empower knowledge transfer in the Caribbean through effective Intellectual Property Rights and Knowledge Transfer regimes. Innovative systems are thus strengthened by promoting the generation, application and transfer of scientific knowledge in order to improve access and energy efficiency.

Closing session of the Course on Industrial Property Administration
On 23 November, the 6th Edition of the Course on Industrial Property Administration (Paralegals) held its closing session with the presence of the Director General of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). The participants, who came from companies, agencies and Industrial Property offices or Industrial Property Regional Information Centres and OTRIs (Offices for the Transfer of Research Findings), were able to study Industrial Property in depth during five training modules given by over 40 teachers.

The course, which involved 105 teaching hours, was held as part of the Carlos Fernández-Novoa Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property created in 2011 and is the result of collaboration between the Escuela de Organización Industrial (EOI) and the SPTO.

Visit to the SPTO by a delegation of officials from the Chinese People’s Republic
On 24 November, a delegation of officials from several cities in the Chinese People’s Republic visited the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO). The six Directors from the Industry and Trade Department forming the delegation were able to gain first-hand knowledge of the Trademark Department and to learn about how it functions. They also received information on the actions and awareness campaigns being carried out by the SPTO against counterfeiting

Publication of the presentations given during the Series of Meetings held in collaboration with Industrial Property Regional Information Centres
The presentations given during the Meetings held in collaboration with the Industrial Property Regional Information Centres and forming part of the activities of the Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property have now been published. The Meetings covered two topics:

  • Series of meetings on Patents and Utility Models: strategic tools for protection. The purpose of this series of meetings was to demonstrate different business strategies when registering a Patent or Utility Model, and to present the main novelties in Patent Act 24/2015 which is to enter into force in April 2017. Meetings have been held to date in Yecla (Murcia), Llanera (Oviedo) and León. (Access to Presentations).

  • Series of meetings on Differentiation by means of Trademarks and Designs. These meetings, which continued on from those held in 2015, aim to create awareness about the importance of differentiation in the market by means of proper protection of Trademarks or Industrial Designs. The series, held this year in Iruña-Pamplona, León, Murcia and Logroño, targets designers, architects, craftworkers and students in Schools of Fine Arts, Architecture and Art, as well as SMEs and entrepreneurs.
