Tribute to Professor Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa

On 10 May, a tribute was paid to Professor Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa on the premises of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) in Madrid in the presence of former students and colleagues. The SPTO Director General presented a commemorative plaque to the family of this Professor of Industrial and Intellectual Property, who was one of the main experts in Spain and abroad on this topic.

During the event, which was organised by the Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property and the Fundación Pons and opened by the Director General of SPTO, Fernández-Nóvoa was described as “a great conversationalist but a man of few words” and “always ahead of his time”. He “never tired of learning”, and “did excellent, steadfast work in Trademark Law and Advertising Law”.

A pioneer
The world of Industrial Property (IP) and, especially, the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO) have every reason to be grateful to Professor Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa. He was a pioneer in this field in Spain, creating a school within the University of Santiago de Compostela which has passed on his knowledge throughout Spain and beyond. As a result of his efforts, discipline and experience, Spain now has numerous IP teachers and specialists. It was these personal qualities that led the SPTO to create, in collaboration with the Fundación EOI, the Carlos Fernández-Nóvoa Chair in Innovation and Industrial Property, whose Honorary Professorship he accepted without hesitation.
