SPTO and COP25

The Spanish Patent and Trademark Office, O.A. (SPTO), from the perspective of innovation and the protection of research results, is involved in the fight against climate change and the development of different technologies that slow its impact.

For this reason, and taking advantage of the celebration in Madrid of the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP25), the SPTO has been very involved in the organization of parallel events organized at the end of the so-called COP25.

During these days we had the opportunity to host at our headquarters such diverse organizations as AMETIC (digital technology industry), Biosphere (Responsible Tourism Institute), FACONAUTO (car dealership association) and AOP (Oil Association).

The speakers of these days in such diverse areas illustrated us about the measures they took to benefit sustainability. In addition to specialist speakers from these sectors, we were pleased to receive the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism and the Undersecretary of Industry, Commerce and Tourism and President of the SPTO, among many other personalities.

Other events were also organized, of a somewhat more internal nature due to being focused on issues more directly related to the Office and its activities.

In the entrance hall of the SPTO, the exhibition "Energy sustainability, 540 years in Spain" was exhibited, which takes a tour of the inventions in the field of wind energy from the first invention privilege registered in Spain to the current wind turbines.

Informative talks were held on SPTO publications especially related to environmental sustainability. The Bulletin of Technological Surveillance on Oceanic Energies, the future of the Spanish-Portuguese collaboration, whose objective is to provide the quarterly follow-up of the latest developments and publications of international patent applications in the technical field of Marine Energies.

On the other hand, the “Report on Climate Change Mitigation Technologies 2006-2019” was presented, and reveals the evolution of these technologies through the publication of patent applications as indicators of investment in R & D & I in Related technical fields. This study has been carried out through a tool of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and is the continuation of a series of studies that the SPTO has been conducting annually since 2014 and, which includes the evolution of these technologies since 2004.

But not everything was related to technology and patents. We also had the opportunity to see how brands, specifically well-known brands, put their contribution in the fight against climate change at the round table held at IFEMA "Renowned Spanish Brands and Sustainable Development Goals".

As a climax to these days of intense activity we had the opportunity to receive a visit from a school of Primary Education. The students and teachers were received by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Tourism with whom they enjoyed the exhibition on energy sustainability hosted in the SPTO hall. The children also held a workshop through which they were able to know in a practical way the basic concepts of Industrial Property and its relationship with sustainability and climate change.

In summary, they have been a few days of intense activity, which we have shared with our city and in which from the perspective of Industrial Property we have tried to put our grain of sand for energy sustainability and the fight against climate change.
