European patents validation in Spain is now easierEuropean patents validation in Spain is now easier One of the objectives of the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (OEPM) is to simplify the procedures for the different types of industrial property (IP) in order to improve and facilitate the procedures of the various industrial property titles. European Patent Office (EPO) has issued a new decision on the filing of applications and other documents that will facilitate the harmonization of requirements between the EPO and the OEPM, allowing greater flexibility in the filing of documents and reducing administrative barriers for applicants. The Decision of the President of the EPO dated July 25, 2025 (OJ EPO 2025, A49), which will enter into force on October 1, 2025, introduces a significant change: the possibility of filing color or grayscale drawings in European applications, provided they are filed electronically. This change will have a significant impact on the validation process for European patents in Spain, as the SPTO will require drawings to be submitted in color or grayscale, provided that they have been granted and published by the European Patent Office.
