The Spanish Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities has awarded the 2025 National Innovation and Design Awards, recognizing professionals and companies that are making a deep impact in their respective fields, demonstrating that innovation and design are essential drivers of progress and creativity in our country. Among the winners is Luis Felipe Serrano Pubul, recognized for his exemplary career in research and knowledge transfer. As director of the Center for Genomic Regulation in Barcelona, Serrano Pubul has led pioneering advances in biomedicine, from the development of drugs for cancer and neurodegenerative diseases to the creation of FoldX, a world-renowned software program in structural biology. His commitment to excellence and innovation has made him an international benchmark. Serrano Pubul, in addition to being a renowned scientist, has stood out for his prolific activity in protecting his inventions through patents. In the business sphere, Fertinagro Biotech SL has been awarded the Large Innovative Company Award for its leadership in agro-industrial innovation. With more than 260 patents in 29 countries, this company has demonstrated a firm commitment to sustainability and research, developing efficient fertilizers and technologies that promote more sustainable and competitive agriculture globally. Sepiia 2080 SL, recognized with the Innovative Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Award for revolutionizing fashion with smart and sustainable garments, manufactured in Spain with recycled materials. Its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and local production positions it as a benchmark in ecological and functional fashion. This SME has also used industrial property to protect the results of its creations. The Young Innovative Talent Award went to Marcos González Sanz for his work in technological areas such as clean hydrogen and the aerospace industry, leading pioneering solutions that improve the autonomy and sustainability of unmanned aerial vehicles. His innovative vision and leadership in the sector make him a key figure for the future of clean technology in Spain. In the world of design, Patricia Urquiola Hidalgo has been honored for her outstanding international career, which has transformed contemporary design with iconic pieces and a profound influence on architecture and furniture. Her work combines technological innovation, artisanal sensitivity, and sustainability, enriching the vision of 21st-century design. Likewise, Viccarbe Habitat SL has been awarded in the Design and Business category for its furniture that fuses aesthetics, functionality, and environmental respect, reflecting the essence of Mediterranean style in interior design worldwide. This company has designs registered with the OEPM. In the Young Design Professionals category, Miguel Leiro Fernández-Cuesta has been recognized for his bold creativity and his ability to connect design with culture and experimentation. His work on innovative projects and his leadership in projects such as the Mayrit biennial position him as an influential figure in the new generation of Spanish designers. Finally, in the design career category, Diego Areso Nieva has been recognized for his impact on editorial and graphic design, transforming the image of the media in the digital age and training new generations of professionals in Spain. Meanwhile, the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) held the DesignEurope Awards ceremony in Copenhagen, recognizing excellence in design among European Union registered design holders. Two Spaniards were finalists, demonstrating once again that companies and designers from our country are at the forefront of innovation and aspire to the highest standards. Specifically, the Valencian company Cecotec with its electric ‘Bicinete’ and María García Mansilla from Teruel for her design of the charging station for electric vehicles ‘The Solar Trees’. Cecotec's Bicinete offers a novel approach to urban mobility. It is designed as a hybrid vehicle, combining the ergonomics of a bicycle with the agility of an electric motorcycle. Fastned's solar trees represent a distinctive innovation in electric vehicle charging, seamlessly merging sustainable technology with an architectural vision inspired by nature.
