Joint EUIPO-OECD studyJoint EUIPO-OECD study Relationship between counterfeit production and labor exploitation The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) have jointly published a study providing evidence that trade in counterfeit goods is closely linked to labor exploitation: forced labor, child labor, and unsafe working conditions. Study findings: - Countries of origin for counterfeit goods show higher levels of labor exploitation, child labor, illegal employment, and workplace accidents. - Countries with weaker labor protections are more exposed to illicit trade networks. - The report shows that labor exploitation is associated with the trade in counterfeit goods. - The trade in counterfeit goods relies on abusive labor practices to cut costs and maximize profits.
