More and Better Industrial Property, for More and Better Industry

More and Better Industrial Property, for More and Better Industry

Summers in Santander are experienced in a different way—not only because of its pleasant climate and beautiful beaches, but above all because of the Summer Courses at the Menéndez Pelayo International University (UIMP).

At the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO), we celebrated the 20th anniversary of our summer seminar with the course “More and Better Industrial Property, for a Stronger and More Successful Industry”, where we analyzed the success stories of several Spanish companies and SMEs.

During the course, we learned—directly from their executives—how these companies strategically manage their portfolios of intangible assets to grow and become more competitive.

Trademarks and industrial designs serve as differentiators in the market, adding value to the products and services offered by companies and fostering security and trust among consumers.

Strategic innovation management enables instruments such as patents and utility models to provide their holders with a competitive advantage that is critical to business success. Companies can develop their long-term business model based on their intangible assets with greater certainty and the ability to make more accurate projections about the future.

We have seen how all of this is particularly relevant in sectors such as telecommunications, where rapid technological advancement demands agile and effective protection of innovation. Or in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, where protecting disruptive discoveries in highly competitive environments is crucial. We have also witnessed how industrial property rights can drive the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy models.

We are convinced that all these examples will inspire more and more companies to integrate industrial property rights into their overall strategy as a business-generating asset, thereby strengthening Spain’s industrial fabric through protected innovation.
